Liz Detwiler, Rector of Walsh Hall

Well hello! I'm the Rector of Walsh Hall!  For those of you who don't know what a Notre Dame Rector is, the shortest way I've found to describe it is if a Campus Minister and a Student Activities professional and a Resident Director all had a baby together and called her a "Rector".

Basically, I run the hall from multiple facets. I'm a full-time professional (most other schools have grad students in similar roles) living in residence in Walsh helping the WILD women become the best versions of themselves! For a more detailed description of what a rector is and does, see the links below.

This is just quick bio: I joined the Notre Dame family in 2014 with several years of experience in higher education and college campus ministry. I graduated from the University of Missouri – Columbia with a Bachelor’s degree in Communications and moved to Chicago as a Residence Hall Chaplain at Saint Xavier University. While in Chicago, I co-taught an undergraduate class on service-learning, supervised resident peer ministers, mentored RAs, and collaborated with Residence Hall staff to create a retreat program.

After completing a graduate certificate in Pastoral Studies at Saint Xavier, I moved back to my hometown of St. Louis to serve as a Campus Minister at the Catholic Newman Center at the University of Missouri – St. Louis, where I organized all social, spiritual and service programming for three years.  I loved it, and to learn more about this calling, I eventually left St. Louis to pursue a Masters of Divinity degree at the Boston College School of Theology and Ministry.  As part of my formation and study there, I worked with several undergraduate programs in service-learning and leadership at Boston College as well as interning as a hospital chaplain in the emergency room/trauma ICU at a Level 1 Trauma Hospital. When not spending time with my students, I’m probably trying to show you pictures of my adorable nieces and nephews!  (You've been warned).

I hope to foster an openness and depth in this community to reflect on life experiences with a lens of transformative faith. All are welcome. All moments, all students.

This job is multi-faceted, fast paced, unpredictable and demands much--but I trust my women, and so far that has been enough.

I imagine it always will be.

What is a rector?

A Rector is a full-time staff member who lives in Walsh with us (Liz's apartment and office are on the first floor right off the lobby). Some of your friends at other schools might have separate people who function as Hall Directors and Resident Ministers; a Rector is basically a combination of these things. She is in charge of the logistics of the building, oversees all events and programming, serves as a pastor of the community, and builds relationships. Basically, #allthethings.
