Frequently Asked Questions in Walsh
What time is it?
We are in the Eastern time zone all year.
What is the weather like?
Our weather can be unpredictable. This semester, since we are starting early--we may not have to manage the depths of winter--but you should bring layers and raingear because November has had 70 degree days and snow in the same month. August and September will be hot and humid, especially if you live on a higher floor in a hall.
Can I move in early?
No. There are no "early move ins" due to our staged process. Every single student will have their own designated time slot to move in. See the Housing website for more info.
How do i know where I am living next year?
First Year hall assignments are posted in the Office of Residential Life's information on your InsideND page. Assignments should be up the first week in July. If you have not received your dorm assignment, contact the Office of Residential Life; Walsh staff do not know the specific date of room announcements.
What are the dimensions of my room?
While both Walsh and Residential Life offer access to floor plans for our hall, we don't have access to the dimensions of each room. Every single room in Walsh is different, even after our major renovation.
How do i get off campus?
Notre Dame’s campus is pretty enclosed, which makes for a great atmosphere but causes some difficulties. While the Huddle provides for most of your needs, you will probably need to get off campus at least a few times. The taxi services, Uber, and Lyft are pretty dependable for shopping and weekend endeavors. The local bus system offers two free TRANSPO routes for Notre Dame students. One runs between ND, St. Mary’s and Holy Cross. The other runs to University Park Mall. You can take another bus from the mall to other places in the area, including, Target and Meijer. You must show your ID to use the free TRANSPO routes.
What meal plan should i choose?
There are two options for meal plans at ND for first years. We've just gotten upgraded options for upperclass students! Click here to see what works best for you!
what are domer dollars?
Domer dollars are like a debit card on your student ID. You (or your parents/guardians) put money on your student account and you can spend them at food locations on campus as well as additional locations like the bookstore, Copy Shop, concession stands in the Football Stadium, and certain vending machines.
What should i do about money?
Click here for updated banking options available to you ON CAMPUS! In addition, you can write out checks from a checking account for cash at the Cashier Services office in Main Building. They are only open from 9am-5pm Mon-Fri, which can cause inconveniences. Though credit cards are not necessary, they are useful in case of emergencies. Some banks, like Bank of America, have completely digitized banking options, like depositing checks, but you'd still have to pay a fee to get cash. There are also ATM's in the basement of the LaFortune Student Center.
What should i do about laundry?
If you would prefer to do your own laundry, Walsh is equipped with washers and dryers for FREE USAGE! If you plan to do your laundry, don’t forget laundry detergent, dryer sheets etc.
St. Michael's Laundry provides bundle service for $285/semester OR per item service. Bundle service includes all machine washable clothing submitted in your bundle each week. They will wash, dry, and fold your laundry. They pick up the laundry from Walsh and return it to Walsh. Dry cleaning and tailor services are available at the laundry distribution center.

What's the dorm technology like?
Each room has wireless Internet access and cell phone service. Walsh is equipped with a large, commercial printer for the hall to use as well.
What cell phone provider should i use?
Whether you have AT&T, Verizon, Sprint, T-Mobile, or US Cellular, everyone has good and bad areas of cell phone usage.
What are parietals?
Parietals are like "Visitation Hours" at other schools. At Notre Dame, they mark the time when men cannot be in women's dorms and vice versa, this includes siblings, parents, and relatives of the opposite sex. On weekdays, parietals mean male guests cannot be in Walsh from 12am to 9am and from 2am to 9am on weekends. Each dorm has a 24-hour space where men and women can hang out all of the time. Walsh’s 24-hour space is the south side of the basement. They allow for more bonding in Walsh and late night privacy, for instance.
is there a kitchen i can use?
Our hall has a kitchen in its basement AND ON EVERY FLOOR for the use of the students. Each kitchen will have the basics of pots/pans/dishtowels/mixing bowls, etc...Each kitchen has a stove, oven, and microwave. Residents who use the kitchen are expected to clean up after themselves and wash all used dishes.
are there study lounges in the hall?
Yes. There is one large study lounge, called NoLo (North Lounge) which is a silent study lounge. The rest of the lounges throughout the basement and on each floor are considered "loud" lounges for homework, group work, socializing, and holding events.

Mail/Packages
- Walsh has several resident mail clerks who sort the mail every day and distribute it to our student's mailboxes.
- For larger packages: students will be notified via email if they have a package and then have 48 hours to come and claim it from the mail room during package hours (TBD).
- USPS Mail is delivered to the main center on campus and then delivered to the dorm (usually within one or two days) from Monday-Sunday (excluding federal holidays) and will be sorted by the mail clerk in the afternoon each day. Please try to check it every day if possible!
- Packages small enough to fit in the mailboxes will be placed there for pick-up. Also, boxes can fill up quickly due to their limited size.
- Outgoing mail is picked up from the Walsh mailroom Monday-Saturday, however, it requires an additional day of campus mail processing. There are also standard USPS blue mailboxes at both dining halls, the library, by the stadium, and at the campus post office.
- Sending a package? You can ship it from the campus post office, FedEx in LaFun, or a UPS drop box (LaFun, Grace Hall, McKenna Hall, Mendoza, Hesburgh, or the Mail Distribution Center).
- The campus post office is located in Hammes-Mowbray Hall, behind Flanner Hall and across the street. If you need help locating it, we're more than happy to help. At least one mail clerk had the same trouble freshman year.
- Amazon (who uses UPS) does deliver to right outside your room door.
- Due to the fact that USPS Mail does not deliver to addresses on campus, Express Mail packages are NOT always delivered the next day.
- Lastly, Labor Day is a federal holiday with no USPS delivery. The regular mail schedule will resume Tuesday.
