We have six washing machines and 10 dryers for 160 people to share. Set a timer so you can come move your clothes as soon as they're done and the next person can use the machine. Only fill the washing machine 3/4 of the way up with clothes and only use about a Tide Pod worth of detergent (any more leads to the machines breaking more frequently).
Kitchens
Clean up after yourselves in the kitchen. We have clerks who will occasionally deep clean the kitchen, but YOU are responsible for washing, drying, and putting away the dishes that you use. You are responsible for cleaning up anything that spilled on the counters, floor etc. There are trash cans in drawers in each kitchen along with other smaller bins. Don't overfill the trash cans; find one that isn't as full to dispose of your trash. It is imperative that you clean up after yourselves out of respect for those who will use the space after you.
Trash & Recycling
Large trash bins can be found near the middle of each hallway. You can empty the small trash cans in your rooms into those bins, or take them directly out to the dumpster (this may become necessary when the bins are full e.g. during Move-in and Move-out). Break down cardboard boxes and recycle them in the trapezoid shaped bin across from the laundry room. All other recycling (paper, plastic, glass, etc.) can be placed in the tall blue toters in the basement hallway on the northwest side.
Hallways
Nothing is allowed to be in the hallways on the floor. Organizers may hang over your doors (people sometimes use them for shoe storage) as long as they don't hit the floor. If it’s a rainy night, you can keep a pair of shoes and an umbrella out overnight, but bring them in as soon as they’re dry. Let’s be respectful of our housekeepers and not make them clean around our belongings. All furniture assigned to your room and all personal belongings must remain in your room with the exception of shower caddies which many residents store on the bathroom shelves.
Luggage Storage
Suitcases, duffel bags, and plastic storage bins may be stored in Walsh's luggage storage room (closet on NW side of basement). It remains locked for most of the year with the exception of Move-in, Move-out, and immediately before and after breaks. If you need it opened at other times, talk to a Hall Staff member during nighttime duty hours.
Mail & Package Hours
You will receive a mail key upon check-in which opens your mailbox, located on the first floor next to the elevator. Mail Clerks will hold package hours 6* days a week and will email you if you have a package that needs to be picked up. Unless you’re waiting on medication or something else urgent, you will not be able to access the mailroom outside of those hours. Package Hours Fall 2024: Monday: 9-10pm Tuesday: 3:30-4:30pm Wednesday: 3:30-4:30pm Thursday: 2-3pm Friday: 3:30-4:30pm Saturday: 4-5pm* *there will be no Package Hours on Home Football Saturdays
Work Orders
QR codes are posted around the hall that link to a google form where you can report that something is broken or malfunctioning (washing machines, windows, showerhead, etc.). The link is also in the "Forms" section of the website. Help us keep our home running at its best!
Lockouts
Be extra careful to keep your ID or phone on you at all times to prevent getting locked out. If you are locked out of the building and you don’t have your phone with your digital ID on it, there’s not really a way for you to contact anyone to help. If you’re locked out of the building and have your phone but you left your ID card somewhere, try to get in touch with your roommate (if you have one) first. Then send a message in the Hall GroupMe to see if anyone in the building can let you in, then you can try your RA and as a last resort call the duty phone, but by that time someone has most likely already come to the door by happenstance. If you’re locked out of your room, the process is similar. First try your roommate, then try walking around to see if any hall staff is in the building, and if you can’t find any of us, then call the duty phone. And if you don’t have your phone which has your ID, walk around to try to find staff in the building, and last resort find someone with a phone to call the duty phone.
Duty Phone
The duty phone is active 24/7 during the academic year and is always answered by a member of Hall Staff. It is used in emergent situations such as someone needing medical assistance, someone needing help getting out of an unsafe situation, or as a last resort if someone is locked out of their room. The duty phone number is (574) 631-5750. Residents are encouraged to save this number into their phone so it's within reach in an emergency.
